Dragon Ball Creator Akira Toriyama's Sand Land Gets New Anime Film in August 2023

Akira Toriyama's Sand Land is set to receive a new anime film adaptation, produced by Sunrise Studios, Kamikaze Douga, and Anima. The movie is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on August 18, 2023. This announcement coincided with World Water Day, which is fitting as Sand Land's plot revolves around a world without water. The project was previously announced in December 2022 as a "screen adaptation."
Sand Land is Toriyama's third serialized manga, following Dr. Slump and the world-famous Dragon Ball series. Serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from May to August 2000, it centers on Sheriff Rao, who seeks help from the king of demons to find a lake in a barren wasteland where the water supply is controlled by a greedy king. He is joined by the king's son Beelzebub and an assistant named Thief as they face dragons, bandits, and the King's army on their quest.

The three studios producing the Sand Land film adaptation suggest a massive budget and high-quality potential. The unveiled character visuals, including Beelzebub, Thief, and Rao, further imply a high-quality adaptation.
Aside from his work on Sand Land, Toriyama is best known for creating Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump, as well as being a character designer for the Dragon Quest, Blue Dragon, and Chrono Trigger video games.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the Sand Land anime film, which promises to be an epic adventure with tank-based action and shonen-esque battles, as the trio works to restore the world's water supply.
